People with long-term respiratory conditions who are
living with breathlessness may be suitable to attend a pulmonary rehabilitation
course.
The usual format for a session is one hour is spent doing
an individually tailored exercise programme under the supervision of
an experienced team member and designed to help increase the patient's
fitness and confidence in managing their condition. The second hour
is usually taken up with education using staff, guest speakers or a
discussion, which provides an opportunity for people to learn about
their condition and share experiences
The respiratory team will be on hand at all times to
help and give advice to people who have long term respiratory disease,
which affects their lungs and results in breathlessness. Patients are
also encouraged to perform exercises once they get home so our programme
includes functional exercises that can be easily reproduced in the
home setting.
Referral criteria
Patients referred to a pulmonary rehabilitation team
must be in a stable state of their disease, have had their medical
therapy optimised, be capable of participating in a group class and
be motivated and have the ability to attend for the period of the programme.
Patients requiring oxygen therapy during exercise are not excluded.
Assessment for ambulatory oxygen should be performed
before attendance at pulmonary rehabilitation. Some classes may be
provided in a non-clinical setting in a well gymnasium supervised by
staff taught to manage patients with breathlessness
