The above support group has only been operating from Carlton Pavilion for around four months and membership has spiralled in that time to almost one hundred patrons.
The support group offers exercise, rehabilitation and socialisation to those who suffer from heart disease, respiratory disease and other medical p roblems, which limit their activity levels.
There are various social events, which take place each year including an annual golf competition, playing for a series of different prizes. The competition is open to members, friends and family and played in two categories;
- Members play for the Harold Fearn Trophy (Harold was the Chairman of Barnsley Coronary Club for over twenty years)
- The others play for the Burroughs Shield (this trophy was made and presented to the Support Group by Ron Burroughs, a previous attendee of Cardiac Rehabilitation).
The competition this year took place at Crookhill Golf Club, Conisbrough with an excellent turn out of members and their friends.
The weather was kind, though breezy and the tree lined course demanded accuracy and good golf to enable individuals to score well.
The quality of golf played was high and several players towards the end were in very close contention for the Harold Fearn trophy.
The eventual trophy winner, with an outstanding score of forty two Stableford points, was Don Kirkaldy. Overcoming fatigue near the end of the round he held it together and beat Raymond Hunt, with thirty six points, in to second place.
There were three “Nearest The Pin” holes and the winners were as follows;
- Don Kirkaldy
- Bill Newton
- Shaun Daykin.
The longest drive was on the 17th hole and was won by Peter Scott.
After a count back over the last nine holes with Bill Newton, Peter Scott won the Burroughs Shield with thirty four points.
The players were well catered for by Helen Scott and Ann Flavell who operated a “buggy cafe” at the 10th tee area providing sandwiches, cakes, fruit and drinks. Ann had made two exceptionally good cakes and some players just could not resist the opportunity to ask for and get more.
The ladies also operated the safety buggy during the round and took action photographs of the players. It’s a pity, though inevitable, that some of the best action photo’s were of the players chomping on the food.
All had a great time and it was suggested that we should investigate the possibility of having two golf competition days per year.
We did decide to try an impromptu game over the next few weeks whilst the good weather is here and feedback will be provided once that takes place. |
